Understanding Psychotherapeutic Counselling: A Path to Mental Wellness and personal growth

In the world of therapy there are a lot of different approaches to healing, and each has their own emphasis and terminology. I remember feeling overwhelmed by it all when I first had to look for some help, and I thought that you might appreciate a short and simple explanation of the therapy I offer, and how it could benefit you.

What is Psychotherapeutic Counselling?

Psychotherapeutic counselling is a special kind of help where a trained therapist works in collaboration with a client to help them have insights into their lives and problems with the aim to bring about change.

What distinguishes psychotherapeutic counselling from traditional counselling is the emphasis it places on the in-depth therapeutic relationship jointly created by the therapist and the client, and also its holistic view of human suffering - which takes into account mind, body and soul, in the context of the client’s circumstances and where they are in their life. This can take the form of short-term counselling work to help you address symptoms such as anxiety or depression, by providing support and a solution focussed approach, and longer-term psychotherapeutic work to help you explore you as a whole person, and the experiences and events that have shaped, enabled, and inhibited who you are in the world.

The Role of the psychotherapeutic Counsellor

Counsellors are trained professionals who create a safe, private, and understanding space for clients to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They use their skills to help clients understand their experiences, notice patterns, and find ways to make positive changes. Trust, empathy, and respect are key parts of this supportive relationship, making clients feel heard and understood.

At the heart of my approach to therapy is the understanding that no one knows you or your story better than you do, and the belief that you have the ability to access your own inner wisdom for healing. My role is to help you explore these things, and the narratives you have come to believe about yourself.

Approaches to Psychotherapeutic Counselling

Psychotherapeutic counselling integrates several different therapeutic approaches, each with its own techniques and ideas. Here are some common ones I will draw from in order to make a tailor made therapy for you:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This approach helps clients identify and challenge negative thoughts and behaviors. It teaches practical skills to manage anxiety, depression, and other issues by encouraging healthier thinking and behavior patterns.

Psychodynamic Therapy: This approach looks at how unconscious thoughts and childhood experiences affect current behavior. Understanding these deep issues can give clients insight into their emotions and relationships.

Existential Therapy: This therapy deals with big questions about life, like the meaning of life, freedom, and isolation. It helps clients find personal meaning and live authentically.

Transactional Analysis: This approach explores how people have been shaped by interactions with nurturing parent figures in early childhood, and how this plays out in adult life through interaction with others. It helps clients understand their social interactions and the things they do consciously or unconsciously to develop or sabotage relationships.

Gestalt Therapy: This therapy focuses on the present moment and encourages clients to experience their emotions fully. It helps clients become more aware of their feelings and behaviors and how they affect their lives.

Benefits of Psychotherapeutic Counselling

Past clients have found a number of benefits through psychotherapeutic counselling:

Improved Mental Health: a reduction in symptoms of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, leading to better overall well-being.

Enhanced Self-Awareness: a deeper understanding of themselves, which can help with personal growth.

Better Coping Mechanisms: learning strategies to handle stress, manage emotions, and deal with life's challenges more effectively.

Improved Relationships: learning about interpersonal dynamics and communication skills to improve their relationships with family, friends, and colleagues.

Personal Empowerment: feeling more in control of their lives, with a clearer sense of purpose and direction.

Conclusion

Psychotherapeutic counselling offers a supportive, solution focussed, approach to treat the symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, and it will also help you explore and grow in awareness of the deeper things of who you are, and how you can use this understanding to make foundational changes in your life.
